The Deep Imaging Analytics Lab (DIAL) is affiliated with the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies in the Biomedical Imaging Cluster. It is operated under the direction of Dr. Pingkun Yan. The main focus of our research is the development of novel methods and systems for intelligent medical image analysis to advance the understanding, visualization and application of medical images using machine learning and computer vision techniques. We work with a variety of imaging modalities for different applications, ranging from multi-modal image fusion guided interventions to disease detection and grading in single images or image series.
Our group strives to make meaningful innovations in two general areas. One area is the development of novel techniques for medical image computing to better extract and understand the information carried by medical images. These methods include: image segmentation, image registration, and region-of-interest detection and tracking. The other area is the application of these techniques to specific clinical procedures or workflows. Examples of such applications are MR-TRUS fusion-guided prostate cancer biopsy and treatment, time-series ultrasound-based cancer detection and grading, and lung cancer screening image analysis.
We conduct this exciting and truly interdisciplinary research through close collaboration with experts from multiple domains, including physicians, biomedical imaging specialists, mathematicians, and researchers from multiple other engineering disciplines.
